How to create a Twitter list

What if you could quickly check a group of Twitter accounts without having to search or follow each individual one? You can! Twitter Lists are probably one of the platform’s best-kept secrets. And the good news is they are easy to create and manage.

In fact, Twitter recently provided some tips on how social media managers can effectively use Lists. This includes: checking out the competition, staying up to date on social media news, connecting with peers, and following accounts for inspiration.

But really anyone can benefit from Lists, because they take all the conversations that are happening every second on Twitter, and help filter them into chats and accounts you specifically select. And as we mentioned above, you don’t have to be following accounts to put them into Lists (which also makes them great for competitive analysis!).

How do I set up a Twitter list?

On desktop:

  • Go to Twitter.com and sign into your account
  • In the left-hand navigation, click on “Lists”
  • Click on the “New List” icon in the top
  • A pop-up will appear; add a name (a description is optional) and check “private”*
  • Click next and then start adding to your list by searching accounts, or checking out the suggestions

*By making a list “private” no one will know they are in the list, which is good if you’re doing competitive analysis, or don’t want to alert a bunch of accounts that they’re in the list

How do I add/remove accounts?

If there’s an account you want to add to a List, click on the three dots in the top-right-hand corner of the profile. You’ll see an option to “Add/Remove From Lists.”

When you click on this, you’ll have the option of adding the account to a current List, or creating a new List. You can also remove accounts from a List by removing the checkmark from beside a list.

How do I view tweets in a list?

On Twitter, click on “Lists” in the left-hand navigation, and then click on the list you want to view. The tweets will appear in chronological order.

Or a better way is to import the list into a dashboard like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck. This way it’s always streaming and you can easily view and engage with tweets. You can do this by clicking on “Add Stream.” Click on “Lists,” select the Twitter account, and then the list you want to import.

How do I see what lists I’m in?

On desktop:

  • Go to Twitter.com and sign into your account
  • Click on “Lists” in the left-hand navigation
  • Click on the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the page and click on “Lists you’re on”

Pinned tweets

Once you get the hang of Twitter Lists, you’ll be surprised how many you create. And if you get a long list of Lists, Twitter offers the option to pin your favourite to the top. Just click on the “pin” icon for the Lists you want to make it easier to find.
